RRR Lima Phase 2
Implementing Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse (RRR) business models in Lima
Climate change and urbanization is challenging Lima’s capacity to satisfy the population’s need for basic goods such as water, energy and food. At the same time, enormous amounts of different waste streams such as wastewater, faecal sludge, organic waste, and used edible oil are disposed without adequate treatment.
The ‘Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse’ project in Lima rethinks sanitation systems and turnes waste streams into physical and financial resources. How? It promotes safe reuse. The project, initiated by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), develops business models for waste recovery and reuse, ensures safety through Sanitation Safety Planning and promotes cost recovery in the sanitation sector. This generates livelihood opportunities for entrepreneurs and increases food security for target populations in Lima and other cities in Peru, while safeguarding public health and the environment. seecon conceptualized and coordinates the project and is in charge of a component that capacitates RRR entrepreneurs and other private and public sector stakeholders to facilitate the realization of RRR business ideas. With our extensive experience and expertise, the seecon team has furthermore led the promotion of Sanitation Safety Planning within the project’s Public Private Working Group on RRR.
