Implementing Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse (RRR) business models in Lima (Phase II)
Visit project page (in Spanish)Lima is growing fast and is approaching 10 million inhabitants, which puts the already arid region under increasing water stress. Resources, especially water, are not sustainably managed and disposed off without any mechanisms for recovery. This leads to a situation, in which freshwater is increasingly scarce, while wastewater and related waste products are not efficiently used. Thanks to our vast experience with market-based approaches to sustainable WASH solutions, we were tasked by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC to develop and implement a program to promote Resource Recovery and safe Reuse (RRR) and contribute to the design of more sustainable water and wastewater governance mechanisms in the capital of Peru.
The Resource Recovery and Safe Reuse Project (RRR Project) focused on rethinking sanitation systems and testing and implementing RRR business models and related Sanitation Safety Planning SSP in Lima. Together with our project partners, we examined the most promising business models for Lima, identified pilot sites and trained the relevant stakeholders on business development and Sanitation Safety Planning (SSP), while assuring an adequate recognition of the project at the political level and the promotion of an enabling environment for RRR arrangements in Lima and Peru in general.
As seecon, we were responsible for contributing to creating an enabling environment for the market uptake of promising RRR business models on a safe and sustainable basis. This included the following activities:
Explore and discover
Business Ecosystem and Market Assessment.
Co-create and design
Design and adaption of promising sustainable business models to tackle waste-related challenges.
Management of multi-stakeholder platform for the promotion of policy dialogue.
Empower
Project Presentation at the 2017 World Water Week
