Artificial light is not only an energy issue. It also affects ecosystems, disrupts the natural day-night rhythm of people, animals and plants, and generates unnecessary costs for municipalities. In nature-based tourism regions such as Flims, Laax and Falera, lighting infrastructure must strike a balance between safety, aesthetics and environmental responsibility. Although legal frameworks and implementation guidelines are available, municipalities often lack the staff and time needed to address the issue systematically and implement appropriate measures.
In collaboration with Flims Laax Falera Management AG, the region’s Destination Management Organization, a workshop on light pollution and sustainable lighting management was held in the municipality of Flims. Representatives from the municipalities of Flims, Laax and Falera, local energy providers, the Mirasteilas Observatory, and the destination worked together to develop sustainable measures to reduce light pollution, with the shared goal of pursuing Dark Sky certification. The workshop was based on the “Lighttoolbox” developed by seecon, which provides municipalities with a systematic framework for developing and implementing lighting strategies tailored to their needs.
Together with Flims Laax Falera Management AG and the municipalities, seecon conducted a participatory workshop based on the “Lighttoolbox”. Specifically, we carried out the following activities:
Co-create and design
Empower
