    Beneficiaries

3 municipalities in the canton of Nidwalden: Stans, Hergiswil, Oberdorf.

Inefficient and unsustainable lighting practices can cause an unnecessary burden on budgets of municipalities and disturb people, animals and plants in their natural rhythm of day and night. Although there is a legal basis and corresponding implementation guidelines for municipalities, they often lack the human resources and time to address the problem in depth.

With the support of the canton of Nidwalden, three municipalities were sensitised on the problems caused by light pollution in the framework of a face-to-face workshop in Stans and developed sustainable lighting management measures as a result. The workshop was based on the “Light Toolbox”, which helps municipalities to systematically design and implement a needs-based lighting strategy. Following the workshop, a “Brochure on the reduction of light emissions in residential areas” was developed and published together with the Office for Environment and Energy of the canton of Nidwalden.

seecon offered the municipalities a participatory awareness-raising workshop based on the “Light Toolbox” and, in particular, we carried out the following activities:

    Co-create and design

    • Joint development of strategies and associated action plans in the field of lighting management at municipal level.

    Empower

    •  Enable communities to reflect on a complex issue in a short time and develop appropriate action plans.

    Reach and connect

    • Organisation and facilitation of a workshop for municipal representatives.
    • Joint elaboration of an action guide for municipalities.
