Access to knowledge is a critical component of inclusive, sustainable development. We aim to remove barriers and promote a free exchange of ideas because we can only meet future challenges. Therefore, in 2010, we have launched the first Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management (SSWM) Toolbox as an open-source integrated knowledge platform for capacity development in the water and sanitation sector (and related sectors). Online knowledge products that can be accessed even from the most remote areas are becoming increasingly important, especially in times of crisis. This platform helps the water and sanitation community access relevant knowledge and drive creative, innovative, and technological advancement in the sector.
The SSWM Toolbox is the most comprehensive and open-source knowledge platform on sustainable sanitation and water management. It provides access to relevant knowledge and compiles “best of” instruments (technologies, methodologies, or planning tools) geared to optimise sanitation and water management interventions in an easy-to-understand yet comprehensive way.
The Toolbox contains over 1000 factsheets, online courses, case studies and an extensive literature database. It is a teaching and implementation tool for planners, NGOs and practitioners, a training and coaching platform for start-ups, a resource for leaders and decision-makers, and a learning tool for students. It is used for the design and implementation of training and workshops worldwide, and much of the content has been translated into different languages. It is continuously updated and enriched with additional knowledge and -thanks to more than 100’000 users per month, it remains the most visited knowledge resource in the sector.
The SSWM Toolbox was the Winner of the IWA-PIA Development Award “Sanitation and Wastewater Software Category” 2011.
