Many water and sanitation initiatives worldwide fail to improve these basic services and do not improve people’s lives. Projects and programs in this sector are not planned considering the water and nutrient cycles, focus on technologies that are not adapted to the locality, and do not include software measures, such as behavioural change programs and strengthening the enabling the environment, that will build up the sustainability of the investments.
After years of building capacity in ecological sanitation in Asia, in 2010, we started to offer our Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management SSWM Training. These are built on the SSWM Toolbox (www.sswm.info), the largest and most visited platform on the topic universally. Our SSWM Training aims to activate a change in the planning, implementation and maintenance of sanitation, water, and resource management systems at the local level through a holistic and participatory approach. The training courses empower participants who understand the concepts behind SSWM and acquire relevant tools for planning and implementing local initiatives in sanitation and water management.
The SSWM Training course enables participants to fully exploit the SSWM Toolbox benefits and develops a thorough understanding of Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management. The SSWM training course usually lasts for one week and follows a participatory, cross-institutional, and interdisciplinary approach.
We have imparted more than 45 SSWM training courses in several countries, including India, Nepal, Philippines, Namibia, Zambia, Senegal, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Nicaragua, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Jordan. More than 1000 participants have been trained in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Kurdish courses.
